Spring into Action
For a lot of us Northerners, it seems like winter just doesn’t want to let go. But as retailers know, spring really is right around the corner. This week, we’re bringing our checklist to review everything you’ll need to get right back into the season.
Update those product lines: Spring brings new product lines for most vendors and/or brands. Our data coordinators work closely with a variety of vendors to get their data ready for you to import directly into Ascend. All you need to do is download the spreadsheet (from www.ascendrms.com) and import it into your system. For step-by-step instructions, our online help topic has you covered.
Why use a spreadsheet instead of using the Update Vendor Products utility from the Ascend Desktop? One word: Control.
Sure, the Update Vendor Products utility is quick and easy – but you don’t get to pick and choose which products are imported. For every 1,000 products imported, your database size increases by approximately 1MB – and while that may seem like much these days, this extra size can really add up over time, and larger database sizes can significantly impact performance. If you only carry a specific product line, just remove the rows you don’t carry (be sure you remove the entire row – don’t just clear the contents – as Ascend will stop importing as soon as it hits a blank row).
Many vendors have different price points, which can’t be accounted for in the Update Vendor Products utility. Spreadsheets also give you the option to further adjust pricing and add additional product fields (e.g. category or gender – you can find the full list of available fields in our online help topic) before you import, so that you don’t need to go back and make changes all over again.

Keep your features up-to-date: The Spring 2017 version of Ascend is just a couple of weeks away. The new version will be available to all retailers on March 28, so set aside ample time outside of your normal business hours to update ASAP. Not sure what that entails? We’ve got an online help topic to walk you through that, too! After you’ve updated Ascend, don’t forget the firmware update for each of your Ingenico payment terminals – this can take up to 15 minutes per device, so give yourself some time to update all of your workstations.
Spring 2017 includes enhanced security and expanded card support for integrated credit card processing, more tracking details for special orders, a brand-spanking-new multi-store back-end platform, and more! Learn everything about the release ahead of time by checking out our overview video (below) for the highlights, then read the release notes for the full details on all the changes.
Spring cleaning: It’s not too late to take charge of your system so that you can get the best data out of everything we offer. Our Recommended System Maintenance checklists make it easy, and will walk you through all of the best practices you should be following daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly. And don’t forget to set up a cycle count schedule for the year – you’ll thank yourself when your year-end physical inventory counts come around!
Help has a new home: Our online help and release notes now have an easy-to-remember URL – just point your browser to help.ascendrms.com. For the moment, you will be asked for your country every time, but this change gives us room to evolve, so stay tuned for more changes to come. And suggestions are always welcome – have your friendly neighborhood support tech pass them along to the communications team, or send them direct to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Of course, you can still access the help from the Help tab on our website, or from the Help buttons throughout the program. And release notes for all current and past versions of Ascend are always available right from the Update Ascend button.
